Clinical focus

Dually neuro- and orthopaedic spine fellowship-trained spine surgeon with over 20 years of surgical experience. Leadership roles in major spine training hospitals. For the last 5 years, his primary focus has been on all forms of paediatric spine deformity, including idiopathic, neuromuscular and congenital causes.

About me

I completed my medical training in Germany and spent my electives in South Africa and the USA. I became involved in anatomical spine research in 1993 under the mentorship of Professor R Putz of the Anatomical Institute of the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich. This led to a dedicated interest in spinal disorders, which influenced my subsequent postgraduate surgical training.

My initial spine surgery training as a resident commenced in Orthopaedic surgery in 1998 under the mentorship of Professor Mayer of the Orthopaedic Clinic München-Harlaching, who encouraged me to obtain combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical training. In 2003, I completed my neurosurgical training under the mentorship of Dr. Jaksche at the Murnau Trauma Centre in Bavaria. A subsequent post in the highly experienced spinal cord injuries department of Murnau Trauma Centre exposed me to the complex care of patients with spinal cord injuries.I undertook three years of dedicated Orthopaedic Spine Surgery fellowship training. This included two years in the Orthopaedic Department of the University of Berne in Switzerland under the mentorship of Professor Heini and a further year focusing on Complex Reconstructive Spine Surgery at the renowned Centre for Spinal Studiesand Surgery at Nottingham University Hospitals, UK. Following my fellowship training, I was appointed Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the Centre for Spinal Studies and Surgery of Nottingham University Hospitals in 2007 and was elected Head of Service in 2010. In this capacity, I led the fellowship training program, which was the largest in Europe then.

I obtained the Venia Legendi (Habilitation) for Neurosurgery at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich. In 2011, I was appointed as an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Division of Orthopaedic and Accident Surgery of the University of Nottingham.

After Brexit, I returned to Germany and established paediatric spine surgery in Germany’s oldest Paediatric Orthopaedic Hospital in Aschau / Bavaria, providing care for scoliosis and other complex spine deformity conditions for paediatric patients of all ages across Germany.
