A spinal surgeon with expertise across all areas of the spine, from the craniocervical junction to the pelvis. Utilises microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques. Focuses on open reconstructive spinal surgery for deformity and tumours of the adult and paediatric spine.
I completed my medical training in Germany and spent my electives in South Africa and the USA. I became involved in anatomical spine research in 1993 under the mentorship of Professor R Putz of the Anatomical Institute of the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich. This led to a dedicated interest in spinal disorders, which influenced my subsequent postgraduate surgical training.
My initial spine surgery training as a resident commenced in Orthopaedic surgery in 1998 under the mentorship of Professor Mayer of the Orthopaedic Clinic München-Harlaching, who encouraged me to obtain combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical training. In 2003, I completed my neurosurgical training under the mentorship of Dr. Jaksche at the Murnau Trauma Centre in Bavaria. A subsequent post in the highlyexperienced spinal cord injuries department of Murnau Trauma Centre exposed me to the complex care of patients with spinal cord injuries.I undertook three years of dedicated Orthopaedic Spine Surgery fellowship training. This included two years in the Orthopaedic Department of the University of Berne in Switzerland under the mentorship of Professor Heini and a further year focusing on Complex Reconstructive Spine Surgery at the renowned Centre for Spinal Studiesand Surgery at Nottingham University Hospitals UK. Following my fellowship training, I was appointed as a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at theCentre for Spinal Studies and Surgery of Nottingham University Hospitals in 2007 and was elected Head of Service in 2010. In this capacity, I led the fellowship training program, which was the largest in Europe at the time.
I obtained the Venia Legendi (Habilitation) for Neurosurgery at the Ludwig-Maximillian University of Munich under the mentorship of Professor Tonn. In 2011, I was appointed as an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Division of Orthopaedic and Accident Surgery of the University of Nottingham. After Brexit, I returned to Germany and established paediatric spine surgery in Germany’s oldest Paediatric Orthopaedic Hospital in Aschau / Bavaria, providing care for complex spine conditions for patients across Germany. My surgical expertise extends across all areas of the spine, from the craniocervical junction to the pelvis. I utilize microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques where applicable, whereby my current clinical focus is on open reconstructive spinal surgery for deformity and tumours of the adult and paediatric spine. Overall, I have performed or supervised > 3,000 surgical spinal procedures. Of these, >1000 are reconstructive procedures, and >500 are classed as complex procedures.
In 2013, I founded NSpine Ltd and GmbH, which have become one of the premier providers of advanced surgical training in reconstructive spine surgery. Our CME-accredited international conferences are acclaimed as among the best educational events annually. I was appointed a Visiting Professor at Nottingham Trent University in the School of Science and Technology in 2015. In this capacity, my innovation and research experience ranges from innovative materials and robotics to surgical simulation (in cooperation with fundamental VR) and designing training protocols. I have participated in numerous innovation projects related to novel materials and technologies.
